Breast Pumps: An Informational Overview
Introduction
Breast pumps are medical devices designed to help individuals express milk from the breasts efficiently and comfortably. They are widely used by breastfeeding parents for a variety of reasons—supporting milk supply, expressing milk for storage, managing engorgement, or facilitating feeding when separation from an infant is necessary. As breastfeeding continues to be encouraged for infant nutrition and maternal health, breast pumps have become essential tools in postpartum care and family life.
What Breast Pumps Are
A breast pump uses gentle suction to draw milk out of the breast and into a collection container. Unlike feeding directly at the breast, which requires the infant’s coordination and latch, pump devices help express milk intentionally and in a controlled way. Modern pumps vary from simple hand-operated models to sophisticated electric systems, but all are designed to mimic the natural rhythm of an infant’s suckle to stimulate let-down and milk flow.
